As a parent of a five-year old, I can attest that children always want things. I can see my daughter’s eyes growing larger as endless toy commercials roll across the screen. However, according to the article, I have not seen the worst of it yet.
A professor of marketing has been studying materialism for over thirty years. In her findings, the pursuit of worldly things hits its peak in middle school. Middle schoolers are often confused about who they are, and whether or not peers like them. In their quest for acceptance and self-confidence, wearing the “right” clothes and having the latest technology helps them define who they are.
