Book Review: The Art of Craft

The art of craft : contemporary works from the Saxe collection

This book details the gift of close to 600 works of contemporary crafts to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The pieces are of glass, ceramic, wood, metal or fiber, and are superbly photographed throughout the book. They were donated by Dorothy and George Saxe, whose collection is distinguished by its high quality and depth.

There are 132 artists represented in this collection of stunning objects – well-known artists in ceramics, wood, fiber and metal – including international artists. Glass artists, Dale Chihuly, William Morris, ceramists Robert Arneson and Peter Voulkos, wood artists Wendell Castel and Sam Maloof, fiber artists Lia Cook and Olga de Amaral, and metal artists Manuel Neri and June Schwarz are featured. You will find the book hard to put down, as I did.  It will be almost as good as an actual trip to one of the San Francisco museums!
