Book Review: Travel as a Political Act
Well, this is a new concept to me. Rick Steves believes that “we can learn more about our own country by observing other countries – and by challenging ourselves (and our neighbors) to be broad-minded when it comes to international issues.” The third edition of this guide lays out Steves’ philosophy of traveling as a political act, with hints on connecting with people, putting aside preconceptions, and overcoming fears. He then reports his travel experiences in several countries that can teach travelers about issues such as Islam, war and peace, and attitudes toward drugs. Rick Steves is an engaging and outspoken writer. If you travel often, this book might give you a new perspective on what he calls traveling on purpose.
