Book Review: Palestine on a Plate

I will be adding Palestine on a Plate: Memories from My Mother’s Kitchen to my home cookbook collection. This scrumptious book is filled with gorgeous pictures and easy to follow instructions. I love that Joudie Kalla includes little blurbs at the start of each recipe about the history of the dish or her remembrances. Moreover, with services like Amazon, the ingredients needed are not that hard to obtain.

Sfiha 2I decided to try Auntie Shala’s Sfiha which is a savory pastry filled with ground lamb and sumac. The dough was surprisingly easy to make as was the filling, aside from me running out of sumac. Stretching the dough was a bit trickier. Looking back, I realized I needed to stretch out the dough even more to get the desired level of crispiness.

It was a success and especially good when paired with saffron milk tea. Check out Palestine on a Plate: Memories from My Mother’s Kitchen at the Prescott Campus Library.
